A plain-language guide

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is software that can recognise patterns, work with language, images or sound, make predictions and generate new content. It does not think like a person: it calculates a likely answer from data, instructions and context.

AI without the mystery

Traditional software follows rules written in advance. An AI model learns patterns from examples and uses them to classify information, recommend an action, predict an outcome or create content.

AI is most useful as an assistant. A person still defines the goal, checks important facts and is responsible for the final decision.

01

Main types of AI

01

Language and generative AI

Writes, summarises, translates, answers questions and works with documents.

02

Image and video AI

Creates and edits pictures, illustrations, presentations, animation and video.

03

Voice, speech and music AI

Recognises speech, creates voice-overs, dubbing, music and audio.

04

Analytical and predictive AI

Finds patterns in tables and business data, forecasts demand and detects anomalies.

05

Recommendation and search AI

Selects relevant products, tools, documents or content for a particular request.

06

Agents and automation

Plans several steps, uses connected tools and automates repeatable work.

02

What AI is used for

Study

Explain topics, prepare a plan, practise a language and analyse sources.

Work

Draft documents, process meetings, compare information and organise tasks.

Business

Support customers, prepare marketing, analyse data and automate processes.

Creativity

Generate ideas, images, video, music, voice and design concepts.

Programming

Explain code, create prototypes, find errors and write tests.

Everyday tasks

Plan travel, compare options, structure information and prepare personal drafts.

03

What AI cannot guarantee

  • AI can confidently produce an incorrect answer.
  • Results can contain bias inherited from training data.
  • Private, medical, financial or confidential information requires special care.
  • Copyright and commercial-use terms differ between services.
  • Important facts and decisions should always be checked by a person.
